Mercury Retrograde: The Astronomy Behind the Myth

All the planets orbit the Sun in the same direction, and the closer a planet is to the Sun, the faster it goes. Mercury completes an orbit in about 88 days; Earth takes 365. Roughly three times a year, faster-moving Mercury catches up to and overtakes Earth on the inside track.

During that overtaking, Mercury appears from our vantage point to slow down, stop, drift backward against the background stars for a few weeks, stop again, and then resume forward motion. It is the same illusion as passing a slower car on the highway: for a moment it looks like the other car is rolling backward, even though you are both moving forward.

Astrologers talk about a pre- and post-retrograde "shadow," the stretch where Mercury travels back over the same zodiac degrees twice. Astronomically this is simply the arc of sky covered by the apparent slowdown-reversal-recovery loop. It is real in the sense that Mercury genuinely retraces that arc from our view; it carries no physical force.

In astrological symbolism, Mercury governs communication, travel, contracts, and small mechanical things. The retrograde is read as a period to review, revise, and double-check rather than launch — back up your files, reread the email before sending, expect scheduling friction.
