Precession: Why the Star Signs Drifted From the Constellations

Earth's axis is tilted about 23.4 degrees, and it does not hold perfectly still. The gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon on Earth's equatorial bulge makes the axis trace a slow circle in the sky, completing one full turn roughly every 25,800 years. Today the axis points near Polaris; in about 12,000 years it will point near the bright star Vega instead.

The vernal equinox — the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator in March — is the anchor point for the tropical zodiac. Because of precession, that point drifts westward against the background constellations by about one degree every 72 years. Over the roughly 2,000 years since the sign dates were codified, it has slipped by around 30 degrees: almost a full sign.

Western (tropical) astrology deliberately ignores the drift. It defines the signs by the seasons — 0 degrees Aries is always the spring equinox — so it is really a calendar of the Sun's relationship to Earth, not a map of which constellation the Sun is in front of. Sidereal astrology, used in most Indian traditions, keeps the signs tied to the actual constellations and applies a correction for precession. Neither is "wrong"; they are measuring different things.

If someone tells you astrology is nonsense because "the signs do not match the stars anymore," they have half a point about sidereal alignment and are missing that tropical astrology never claimed to track constellations. And if you enjoy your sign, precession does not take it away — the seasonal framework it is built on is exactly where it has always been.
